2005-04-15, L C CLARK PUBLISHING - Prominent, outspoken champions to headline sustainable design and business conference in New York City next week in an exploration of how sustainable design and business practices are the defining issues for the 21st century.(PRWEB) April 15, 2005 -- Dr. Lance Secretan, one of the world`s foremost thinkers about leadership, is set to be the opening keynoter at EnvironDesign9, slated for April 20 to 22, 2005, at the Marriott Marquis, New York, NY. Known for his masterful ability to inspire people and reawaken spirit and values in work and life, Secretan is an international best-selling author of 13 books on leadership, an award-winning columnist, philosopher, corporate coach, and one of North America`s most sought-after keynote speakers, retreat leaders and business advisors. He has been voted one of the nation`s top 10 speakers--and one of the 21st century`s most influential. One in five of Industry Week`s 100 Best-Managed Companies is among his clients. Secretan will speak on Wednesday, April 20, at 7:15 p.m., part of the opening evening events slated for EnvironDesign9, the annual conference championing the diverse advancements in environmental stewardship and sustainable development in both the public and private sector. A well-respected symposium, EnvironDesign encompasses many of the critical topics of sustainable design and business practices and their ability to be incorporated into mainstream America. Secretan’s presentation, “Reclaiming Higher Ground,” will set the tone for the conference as he explores how to change the world by reawakening spirit and values in the workplace while building high performance organizations. On Thursday, April 21, at 8 a.m., William McDonough, FAIA, and Michael Braungart, co-founders of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, will explore emerging opportunities in the global economy, especially those in Europe and China in their keynote entitled, “Design for the Circular Economy: Cradle-to-Cradle in China and Europe.” McDonough and Braungart`s book, Cradle-to-Cradle, was published in Chinese by Tongji University in December 2004 and included a foreword written by Mme. Deng Nan, Party Secretary, China Association for Science and Technology and co-chair—with McDonough—of the China-U.S. Center for Sustainable Development. On May 17, 2004, Mme. Nan stated, “It is China’s goal to increase the utilization of resources by a factor of eight to 10 times in order to continue the current rate of growth. If we are to succeed, it is very important to develop a circular economy based on Cradle-to-Cradle design principles. The China-U.S. Center for Sustainable Development is doing what China’s government wants to achieve and the center is one step ahead of the national government." On November 19, 2004, Hu Jintao, President, Peoples’ Republic of China, said, “We should pursue economic development on the basis of resource conservation and build a circular economy.” McDonough and Braungart will also describe projects and products worldwide, ranging in scale from chemical to city and regional plans, that have taken up Cradle-to-Cradle within the last year. On Thursday afternoon, Deirdre Imus, founder of The Deirdre Imus Environmental Center for Pediatric Oncology at Hackensack University Medial Center and founder/co-director of The Imus Ranch, will make the convincing argument that our children are our most precious natural resource--and that their environments shouldn`t harm them. Imus has embarked on a life-long mission to identify, control and ultimately prevent environmental factors that cause adult, and especially, pediatric cancer. Imus` stirring presentation will demonstrate how collectively our voices can realistically help shape the policy decisions that impact our environment and the well-being of our families. Through stories and personal experiences, she will illustrate that while the goal may seem daunting, by working in collaboration with the finest physicians, scientists and innovative thinkers, we should settle for nothing less than a world where environmentally healthy living is common place and standard practice. On Friday, April 22, conference events will begin at 8 a.m. with an eye-opening keynote on “Greening the New York City Skyscape.” In this session, Leslie Hoffman, executive director of Earth Pledge, and Robert Fox, co-founder and partner, Cook + Fox Architects, will explore the opportunities and challenges of making their unique city greener and more livable by mobilizing individuals, corporations and government to adopt sustainable development agendas. Guaranteed to be both thought-provoking and inspirational, Hoffman and Fox will share their experiences, garnered from more than 10 years of environmental advocacy. Hoffman’s non-profit organization identifies and promotes innovative techniques and technologies that restore the balance between human and natural systems, delivering viable models to government, industry and communities. Fox has enjoyed a prominent position of national leadership in the design of sustainable high-rise building and urban design. As a founding partner of Fox & Fowle Architects, he completed more than 30 major projects in New York City, including the influential 4 Times Square-Conde Nast headquarters, which set new sustainable design standards. Currently, Cook + Fox is working on the Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park, a 945-foot-tall crystalline skyscraper, which the firm is targeting to be the world`s most environmentally responsible high-rise office building and the first to strive for a LEED Platinum designation. EnvironDesign9 will close with an insightful look at “Making Consciousness Cool,” delivered by environmental activist Julia Butterfly Hill. In this dynamic, interactive keynote presentation, Hill will make the case for “Making Consciousness Cool, Sustainability Sexy and Integrity and Justice Integral”—an exciting proposition for change and transformation in a cynical and superficial world. The annual EnvironDesign conference, co-produced by Interiors & Sources and green@work magazines, consistently raises the bar in an effort to ensure that sustainable design and business practices are the defining issues for the 21st century.
